Hydrocephalus and its Treatments

July 20, 2012

This is Owen at 1 day old. Right after this he was flown to a different hospital to receive his shunt.

There was a post of a great video in one of the Hydro Forums I’m a part of. The video does a great job explaining what Hydrocephalus is and how it can be treated.

As most of you know, Owen’s Hydrocephalus was diagnosed when I was 20 weeks pregnant. He received his shunt at 1 day old. We have been VERY fortunate to still be on our first shunt. We have had a few scares, but no surgeries needed.

Owen is also a great candidate for the ETV surgery explained in the video. He didn’t receive this on day 1 because of the failure rate in infants. Because his shunt has been so successful so far we wouldn’t consider the ETV surgery at this time.

If (knock on wood it doesn’t happen) Owen’s shunt ever were to fail, we would strongly consider looking at getting the ETV surgery instead of another shunt placement.

I just wanted to share this great video. 🙂

  1. The video explains a lot that I didn’t really understand. I love seeing all of your updates!

    • Thanks. Yeah, I thought it was a great video with a very simple explanation.

  2. Great video! I feel lucky to still have my first shunt and it is almost 12years old. I am 47yo. Thanks for sharing.
