Happy to be on his own

July 19, 2012

In the last month we discovered a way for Owen to be able to swim without us holding onto him. Most of the typical flotation devices didn’t work for him. Either they didn’t fit right or he didn’t understand how to stay upright in them.

A few weeks ago, during aqua therapy, his OT puts him in one of the small inner tubes. As I watch from the other side of the glass I think, no way that’s going to work. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It worked great for Owen. He started kicking around and grinning from ear to ear. You could tell how excited he was about being so independent.

Since then I have taken him swimming several times using the inner tube and it has gone great. It feels so good to see him so happy. Also, it helps the other kids view him as less of a “baby”.
