What does $3000 buy?

January 14, 2012

What does three thousand dollars buy? Well, it depends on who you are. If you are the average Joe… quite a bit. If you are someone with disabilities, not much. How backwards is that?

Just for fun I thought I would do some comparisons. The new communication device they are looking at for Owen, the Springboard Lite, is roughly $3000.

For half that price you can get an all in one iMac computer with 1TB hard drive and 4GB of memory and a 27″ screen.

For the same amount of money you can by a 50″ 3D smart tv.

  1. It’s pretty disgusting. For $3000, you could get high-end laptop capable of professional video editing (I’m talking professional, as in some of the TV shows you see) There is no way this machine even comes close to using that kind of power. Complete BS. They know that they can charge whatever they want, because- if you need it for your child, you have no choice.

  2. My husband and I are always talking about this. It’s really sad that there is a 300+% mark up on anything for special needs. It’s like that Bumbo seat for babies for $30, and the ChildRite seat for special needs is $200. It’s ridiculous. We recently had a fund raiser because we want to buy Lizzie a bicycle. Now, if she was a typical 7-year-old, we’d go to K-mart or Walmart and buy one for less than $100 (probably much less), but the one Lizzie would be able to use is +$4000. It’s so frustrating.

  3. just a thought but have you looked to see if there are apps available to do similar functions?

Maybe you could pay a developer less that 3000 to create one and then sell it to other parents with special needs kids.
