Its all about the routine.

June 22, 2011

This past spring Owen started preschool at our local Early Childhood center. I love the school and Owen’s teachers. They are wonderful. But I noticed Owen regressed in some areas.

There are several factors that contributed to this. One being just that he was now getting all of his therapies at school and we weren’t as involved. There was a break down in communication between us and PT. So, we didn’t have as much follow through at home. But I think the biggie is lack of routine.

Owen thrives when his PT is combined with his daily activities as opposed to once a week for 60 mins. This summer we have been taking Owen to school (Howard Park on some days and Webster Groves on others). But when we take him we make him walk to class and walk out of class. Using his walker is tied into his routines.

It has made a huge difference. Its like all of a sudden he’s back on track. During the school year he rides the bus to and from school. He has to use a kidcart (toddler sized wheel-chair) to rid on the bus. So, when they get to school they just push him to class in the chair.

I’m going to have to have a talk with his teachers/therapists before the new school year starts. We need to figure out how to incorporate more walking in Owen’s daily routines at school. Wish me luck. šŸ™‚
